Vjosa Valley Adventure: Rafting Europe's Last Wild River by Rental Car

In a continent where almost every river has been dammed, channelised or paved, the Vjosa is a small miracle. It runs 270 km from the Pindus mountains in Greece to the Adriatic coast in Albania — entirely free-flowing, with side streams, gravel banks and floodplains intact. In 2023 it was declared Europe's first Wild River National Park, and Vjosa rafting is now one of the country's signature outdoor experiences.

This guide walks you through how to combine a rental car road trip with a guided rafting day on the Vjosa.

Why raft the Vjosa?

Most European whitewater is short, technical and surrounded by infrastructure. The Vjosa is the opposite: long, scenic, and surrounded almost entirely by mountains, willow forests and small Ottoman villages. The water is glacial cyan in spring, jade green in summer. You'll see herons, otters and (if you're lucky) Egyptian vultures circling overhead.

Rapids are mostly class II with occasional class III sections — easy enough that beginners and families with older kids can join, exciting enough to feel like a real adventure.

Best base: Përmet

The town of Përmet, about 4.5 hours' drive south of Tirana, is the obvious launch point for Vjosa rafting. It sits on the river, has plenty of small guesthouses, excellent local food (try the byrek and fresh trout), and a relaxed alpine feel. Park your rental car at your guesthouse — you won't need it for the rafting day itself.

How to book a guided trip

Do not raft the Vjosa solo unless you are an experienced kayaker — the river has fast water, gravel obstacles and remote sections without easy exits. Book with a guided operator. Vjosa Rafting is a local company based in Përmet that runs:

  • Half-day descents (~2.5 hours on the water) — perfect for first-timers and families
  • Full-day expeditions covering the wildest sections downstream
  • Multi-day trips with riverside camping in summer

Trips include neoprene wetsuits, helmets, life vests, certified guides and transfer from your guesthouse to the put-in. Book directly through their website — vjosarafting.com — at least a few days ahead in high season.

When to go

The rafting season runs roughly April to October:

  • April–June: highest water, biggest waves, coldest temperatures. Wetsuits mandatory.
  • July–August: lower flow but warm air and water — ideal for families.
  • September–October: stable water, fewer crowds, golden light. Many locals say this is the best month.

What to combine with rafting

Don't drive 4 hours each way for a single half-day on the water — pad the trip out. From Përmet you can easily reach:

  • Bënja thermal baths — natural hot springs by the Ottoman Katiu Bridge, 15 minutes' drive.
  • Hotova-Dangellia National Park — black pine forests and waterfalls, 30 minutes' drive.
  • Gjirokastra — UNESCO "stone city", 1.5 hours' drive south.
  • Berat — UNESCO old town, 2 hours' drive north.

A 3-day Vjosa loop from Tirana is realistic and incredibly rewarding. See our 7-day Albania road trip itinerary for one way to fit it in.

Renting a car for the Vjosa

The drive from Tirana to Përmet is paved but mountainous. Any compact or sedan handles it fine; for the gravel side roads near Bënja and the upper Vjosa villages, a small SUV is more comfortable but not essential. Browse rental cars at Tirana airport on RentalX.
