Albanian Alps by Car: Theth, Valbona & Komani Lake Adventure

The Albanian Alps — locally called Bjeshkët e Nemuna, "the Accursed Mountains" — are a chunk of the Dinaric Alps that somehow escaped the Instagram crowds. You can drive in, hike between glacial valleys, sleep in stone shepherd houses, and meet families that still speak the medieval Kanun law. An Albanian Alps road trip is rough, slow and unforgettable.

The classic route

Most road trips through the Alps follow this loop:

  1. Tirana → Shkodër (95 km, 1.5 h)
  2. Shkodër → Theth (75 km, 2.5 h on a paved-but-windy mountain road)
  3. Theth → Valbona (the famous day hike — leave the car in Theth and pick it up after returning, or coordinate a transfer)
  4. Komani Lake ferry (a 3-hour boat ride across one of the world's most beautiful reservoirs)

Day 1 — Shkodër, your gateway to the Alps

Shkodër is Albania's "city of bicycles" and a charming overnight stop. Walk the pedestrian street, climb up to Rozafa Castle for sunset, and have a long dinner — it's the last "city" food you'll see for a few days.

Day 2 — Drive to Theth

The road to Theth was unpaved and terrifying until 2022 — now it's mostly tarmac, but still narrow and winding through the Bogë Pass. Allow 2.5 hours. Theth itself is a tiny stone village in a glacial bowl, with the iconic stone church, the Grunas Waterfall and the Blue Eye of Theth (a mountain spring) all reachable on foot.

Day 3 — Theth → Valbona hike

This is one of Europe's great day hikes: 17 km, ~9 hours, over the Valbona Pass at 1,795 m. The path is well-marked. Hire a porter or use a transfer service to move your luggage between guesthouses. (You'll need to arrange to retrieve your rental car later.)

Day 4 — Komani Lake ferry

From Valbona, drive about 1.5 hours to the village of Fierza, where the Komani ferry departs. The 3-hour ferry crosses a fjord-like reservoir between sheer canyon walls — it routinely makes lists of the world's most beautiful boat rides. The ferry takes cars (book ahead) and arrives at Komani village, from where it's a 90-minute drive back to Shkodër.

What car do you need?

The Theth road can be done in a sedan, but it's far less stressful in an SUV with decent ground clearance. The Komani ferry road is paved but very narrow — drive carefully. Avoid winter (November–April), when the Theth and Valbona routes can be impassable.

Where to sleep

Family guesthouses are the soul of the Alps. Most cost €25–€45 per person per night, including breakfast and a hearty home-cooked dinner with home-grown vegetables, smoked cheese and rakija. Don't expect five-star service; expect generosity.

Prefer the south? Try the Vjosa

If you're visiting Albania outside the May–October hiking season, or you simply prefer water to mountains, head south instead. The Vjosa Valley offers similar wilderness without the snow risk: rafting through canyons with Vjosa Rafting, soaking in the Bënja thermal pools, and sleeping in tiny mountain villages around Përmet. Practical tips

  • Cash: ATMs are scarce above Shkodër. Bring euros and Albanian lek.
  • Phone signal: spotty in Theth and the upper Valbona valley. Download offline maps.
  • Driving licence: EU/UK/US licences are accepted with most Albanian rental companies — confirm with your rental supplier.
  • Insurance: ask explicitly about gravel roads and undercarriage damage; some policies exclude them.
