Tirana is fun for a couple of days — Skanderbeg Square, BunkArt 2, the Blloku district — but the country's real headline acts are within easy driving distance. Here are the five best day trips from Tirana by rental car, in order of distance.
1. Krujë (35 km, 45 min)
The closest serious day trip. Krujë is a hilltop town built around a 14th-century castle that was the base of Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero. The cobblestone old bazaar sells handmade carpets, copper, and antiques. Lunch on the castle terrace with a view down to the Adriatic. Easy half-day.
2. Durrës (40 km, 45 min)
Albania's main port and the country's beach city. The Roman amphitheatre — second-biggest in the Balkans — is hidden inside the modern town. The seafront promenade has cafés and seafood restaurants. A nice lazy day if you want sun more than sights.
3. Berat (120 km, 2 h)
The "city of a thousand windows", a UNESCO World Heritage site, and probably the most photogenic town in Albania. Park in Mangalem, walk up to the castle, eat at one of the kalaja (castle) restaurants. Easy as a long day trip from Tirana, better as an overnight if you have time.
4. Shkodër & Lake Shkodra (95 km, 1.5 h)
Albania's bike-friendly cultural capital sits on the largest lake in southern Europe. Climb Rozafa Castle, walk the pedestrian street, rent a bike along the lake. Combine with a swim in summer.
5. Vjosa Valley (Përmet) (250 km, 4 h — long day or overnight)
This is a stretch as a day trip, but it's worth a sentence. The drive south to the Vjosa Valley puts you in Përmet, the launch point for rafting Europe's last wild river. If you can spare 2 nights, do it. The half-day rafting trip with Vjosa Rafting is the most adventurous activity in southern Albania, and the scenery on the drive down is genuinely beautiful. Read our Vjosa rafting guide for what to expect.
Closer alternative: Bovilla Lake (40 min)
A quick half-day option just outside Tirana. Bovilla is a turquoise reservoir with a popular hike to the cliff above the dam. Pack a picnic.
Renting a car in Tirana
For these day trips, an economy car is plenty. Pick up at the airport (TIA) where most rental suppliers have desks, including those listed on RentalX. Tirana traffic is dense between 8–10 am and 5–7 pm; plan around it. Most day trips are doable on small B-roads with good Tarmac.
